Snake puzzle · Android and iOS

Gulp

Tap a snake. It eats. The board clears.

A snake slithers forward until something stops it. If its head reaches another snake's tail — gulp. It swallows that snake whole, and now it is longer, and it is facing wherever that snake was facing. One tap is the only control, and every board is built by a generator and measured by a solver before you ever see it.

Get it on Google Play App Store — coming soon

On Google Play now. The iOS version is built from the same source and is in preparation for the App Store; this page is where it will be announced. One purchase, not a subscription.

A Gulp board mid-solve: eight snakes on warm paper, one of them ringed with the dashed path its next tap would take

Eating is the move

It is not a bonus and it is not a score. A bite is how you turn a corner, how you make a snake long enough for a hole, and how you remove a blocker that has no way out of its own.

A snake selected on the board, with the dashed path showing where the tap would carry it
  • A tap sends a snake forward until a wall, an edge or another snake stops it. It never turns on its own.
  • Head to tail tip is a bite: the two become one snake, and the eater inherits the victim's heading. That is the only way to change direction.
  • A hole takes a snake of exactly the right length — so length is something you build, on purpose, by eating.
  • A tap that cannot move is a bump. It costs nothing, ends nothing, and is not a penalty.
  • The Ouroboros: a snake whose head meets its own tail eats itself and is gone from the board.

What is on a board

Every piece changes what a tap does rather than adding a number to it. They arrive one at a time, and the chapter that introduces one is built around it.

Walls and closed edgesWhat a snake stops against, and the sides it may not leave by.
HolesAn exit that only takes a snake of exactly the right length.
Venom snakesCannot be eaten, so they have to be steered out instead.
EggsAdd a segment, and stop you where you may not want to stop.
Sleeping and frozen snakesOne wakes when something passes its head; the other only a bite removes.
Molt tilesDrop a segment behind you as a wall, which dissolves three taps later.

One journey, thirty levels a chapter

Not a picker of packs. The chapters are sections of one list, and the level after the last of a chapter is the first of the next one — which is why the map is a single line you walk down.

The Gulp map: a green snake winding down the screen with numbered level discs on it, each ringed by its difficulty and carrying up to three stars
  • Every board is generated and then measured: one answer, reachable by logic alone, and a par the game counted rather than guessed.
  • The climb runs from a 4×4 board with three snakes to nest chambers fourteen rows deep.
  • Three nightmares — the hardest boards in the game — are mixed into every chapter's climb.
  • Each disc draws the difficulty it was actually built as, so a hard level looks hard before you open it.
  • Every chapter has its own name and its own completion ring, and crossing into one shows its title card over the board.

A puzzle a day, and boards that do not run out

The daily is built from the date, on your device, with no signal: the same board for everyone, everywhere, with nothing to fetch. Monday is calm and Saturday is not.

The daily screen: today's Calm puzzle at the top, a September calendar under it with a snake on each solved day
  • One board a day, free, in a difficulty that follows the day of the week.
  • A streak counted quietly and never nagged about, with earned freezes for the day you miss.
  • Once a day is built it is kept, so a change to the generator never rewrites a board you have already seen.
  • Endless generates on the phone in four bands, Calm to Brutal, checked against everything you have played — a board comes back only once a band has run out of new ones.

Nothing you can lose

No timers. No lives, no hearts, no energy, no coins. Nothing in this game ever ends a puzzle, and the one limit there is is printed on the screen rather than sprung on you.

The win sheet: Chapter cleared, three stars, five taps against a par of seven, and the chapter ring at ninety of ninety
  • Undo and redo are unlimited and free. Restart costs nothing.
  • A level allows two taps past the solver's answer, and both numbers sit at the top of the board the whole time.
  • Stepping back over that line costs an undo, and nothing else.
  • When a board can no longer be solved the game says so, rather than letting you tap on into a dead end.
  • A finished level reports your taps against par and awards up to three stars — the third only for a solve at par with no undo — and then stops.

A hint is the next real tap

Never a revealed board. The solver's own next move on a line that finishes: a pulse on the snake it means, and a ghost path where that snake would go.

The move, not the answer

One tap of a real solution, shown as the snake and the path. What it leaves behind is a board you can carry on reasoning about.

A skip when you want it over

Spend a skip and the solver plays the whole answer out on the board, then puts it back the way it was.

A chip when there is no way out

Stuck in a position nothing can solve, the board tells you so and offers the undo that gets you back to one that can.

Both refill by waiting

Hints and skips come back on their own, and a full bank costs nothing. There is no currency in this game to spend on them.

Made to be looked at, and made to be read

Snakes that breathe, blink and look where their head points, and a bulge that travels down the body after a bite. Every one of those can also be turned off.

The Look section of Settings: theme swatches, snake skins, and switches for colour-blind cues, reduce motion and large targets
  • Boards from warm paper to full black, and six snake skins.
  • Colour-blind cues draw patterns rather than only colour, over every theme.
  • Reduce motion cuts instead of moving, and large targets give bigger cells on a zoomable board.
  • A left-handed layout puts the buttons where your thumb is.
  • A screen reader reads the board snake by snake, and the app speaks 22 languages.

Inside the app

Screens off a real device, nothing redrawn.

No account, and no server of ours

Every board — the journey's, the day's and endless — is made on the device, and your progress is written to a database on it. There is nothing to sign in to, and nothing in this app you type.

Offline at every moment

Not offline-capable — offline. Airplane mode changes nothing except that the store cannot be reached, and an unreachable store never locks anyone out of what they bought.

Nothing about a board leaves

The boards you play, the taps you make, your stars and your streak are written to a database on the device and read back from it. None of it is sent anywhere.

Two switches, both yours

Crash reports, and usage events. Both are in Settings › Data, both are read before anything is collected, and both start switched off in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland.

The whole account is in the privacy policy.

Free, and what the unlock adds

Every chapter, every level, every endless band and the day's daily puzzle are free, and always will be. No level is behind the price.

Questions

How does a snake actually move?

You tap it, and it slides forward in the direction its head already points until a wall, a closed edge or another snake stops it. It never turns by itself. The only way to change a snake's heading is to eat another snake with it, because the eater inherits the victim's heading along with its length.

Can I get stuck in a position that cannot be solved?

Yes, and the game tells you so rather than letting you tap on. A chip appears saying the board is lost, with the undo that takes you back to a position that can still be finished. Undo is unlimited and free, so a dead end costs a tap of your time.

Is there a move limit?

A level allows two taps past the answer the solver found, and both numbers are on screen from the first tap. Crossing that line costs an undo and nothing else — no life, no coin, no restart forced on you.

Where do the boards come from?

From your phone. A generator builds a board and a solver proves it has an answer and counts its par; only then is it drawn. The chapters ship as files built the same way. The daily is seeded from the date, so every device builds the same board with nothing downloaded.

Does it work offline?

Entirely. The generator, the solver, the hints and the save file are all on the device. The only things that ever want a connection are the store and the optional diagnostics.

Do I need an account?

There isn't one. No sign-in, no profile, no leaderboard, and no server of ours for any of them to live on.

What does the unlock cost, and is it a subscription?

It is one purchase, once, priced by the store in your own currency, and it is not a subscription. It adds hints, skips, skins, two boards and the daily archive. No level is behind it.

Which platforms is it on?

Android, on Google Play. The iOS build is from the same source set and is in preparation for the App Store; this page is where it will be announced.
